Myenergi Zappi Chargers have landed apparently

Recommended Posts

I'd been looking for a "smarter" EV charger to work in with my solar PV system, particularly given I don't travel a lot of kms (especially in VIC at the moment!) and often generate more power than I can use (no batteries). Rather than feeding that into the grid for a poor return I'd much rather charge the EV.

On a Facebook group the Zappi was recommended but has been on pre-order for quite some time. It looks like they've just come in so hopefully mine will be shipping shortly. More on how it works once I try it out.

Here's the intelligent 'solar aware' charger Australia has been waiting for. Not only will zappi charge your car way faster than the device supplied with your car, it will also guarantee that all power used to charge is taken from your solar or wind generation. Essentially, this device will guarantee that you will self consume all of your self generated energy rather than sell back to the grid for a pittance.

With FIT dropping all the time, and with a 10kW+ solar PV I find myself with surplus power each day for a grand return of less than $2 a day credit. It's hardly worth it when I have an EV sitting there that could make more economical use of that surplus power.

I wanted a set and forget way of charging the EV rather than monitoring the export manually and plugging in when required. Elon says, a happy Tesla is a plugged in Tesla (to max 80% for best battery life apparently). So my hunt for a solution led me to Myenergi (UK) and its Zappi charger.

It's been installed today and was a direct and easy replacement for the Tesla wall charger, other than running the clamp sensor back to the board.

It does everything it says it will do, and I've set it into ECO+ mode, which will only charge the EV at an appropriate rate based on surplus solar generation. So as we speak I'm charging at 1kW/6A (capable of up to 32A just like the Tesla wall charger), and that charge rate will vary throughout the day. For someone that does little kms (especially now Melbourne is in lockdown), it's essentially trickle charging and that's perfect for our needs.

Overall, a great, smart and intuitive product that works exactly how it says it does. Myenergi make some clever products and I'll be looking further into this brand and its range.

In Australia, EVolution is bringing them in and at the time of writing, the single phase unit is $1,395: https://www.evolutionaustralia.com.au/product-page/myenergi-zappi-7kw-electric-car-charger-for-home

Very happy with the end result, other than ordering the white version, and being supplied with a hybrid white/black due to a factory packing mistake. They wanted me to return the trim cover at my own expense before even shipping out the right part back to me which I just don't agree with (not my mistake), so I'll just put up with it.

That'd make my blood boil.

Seems like a great way to maximise the benefit of your solar.     Now if only the EV batteries could be used to power your house!!.

Still a lot of chatter that Tesla may make it possible in the future. But yes, totally agree!!

I have had my Zappi V1 for almost a year now and it is a great product. Does what it says on the box. Mine is exclusively set to charge on solar and off peak tariff.

A couple of things to be aware of though, you will need the separate myenergi hub to update the firmware. Mine came with a glitchy early version of the firmware and I do not own the hub. Myenergi were very good however and sent me a loaner hub to perform an update. I just had to return post it at my expense. It still does occasionally hang up and require a reset, but not too often. This would likely be fixed with an update to newer firmware, but as noted, I don't have the hub to do so.

I have 3 phase, so needed the extra wifi CT's which work pretty well most of the time. Occasionally the signal seems to drop out, but a reset seems to fix.

All in all, I would recommend the product as its benefits outweigh its minor glitches.

I mistakenly thought V2 included WiFi connectivity but discovered it does not. I've since ordered the Hub and Harvi (I have solar installed on a sub-board the other end of the house so Harvi will make the system more accurate) which should be arriving Monday.

Ahh yes, Harvi. Thats what I meant when i refer to the wifi CT's above.  Will be interested to hear how yours goes over a long range. My Harvi is a located about 10m from the Zappi and has intermittent drop outs.

That's a worry!

After some discussion with myenergi UK this morning it looks like I'm ordering an Eddi too, to handle the diversion to the pool heat pump (using the Eddi's optional relay board). I know there are cheaper ways to achieve what I want, but it made sense to stay within the myenergi ecosystem and have everything able to talk to one another. That's probably for another thread though.

How much Marc and what controls it?

I went with a Keba P20 at 22kVA controlled by a gateway that looks after solar, HVAC, hot water and optionally battery should we go that way in future.

The Keba wasn't inexpensive but so far has been flawless.

There was a a pre-order running for some time, but now it appears to be selling for $1395 inc.

Or if you are talking about the eddi, it's $895. It makes sense to stick within this ecosystem as I now have zappi, harvi, hub etc.

That's higher than I thought it'd be. I paid similarly for my Keba which can be wired to triple that, and is managed off an Ethernet connection.

Running CET's gateway which cost less than the Eddi (doubles as the Eddi+hub+a little more) and the matching tank (which puts the price back up admittedly) is very, very granular in harvesting ability. And it's Australian!

@Marc

Gateway is from these guys http://combined.energy/

Tank is a Solahart Powerstore https://www.solahart.com.au/products/battery-storage/solahart-powerstore/

EVSE is this https://rechargingnsw.com.au/products/kecontact-p20-series/ - I managed somewhere in the $1300s, and it's quite good - runs managed during my peak and shoulder times, unmanaged during offpeak. Hardwired Ethernet. I have it connected at the full 22kVA.

My inverter is same as yours.

    • Redlow is in administration now. Production ceased, support ceased, no buyer found so assets are likely to be liquidated😥
    • Hi Thanks for allowing me to join the site. I have a real passion for saving the environment from fossil fuels. I hope to do all I can to save our beautiful planet through spreading the word of recycling and renewables.
    • Zappi itself works great ... it's the software side of things that definitely needs some work. I remain hopeful and continue to work through it.
    • How are you finding the Y? Everything you expected? Blows me away how many you see on the road now.
    • We've just bought our second home battery. The first one, a lead acid gel battery, has reached EOL. We've replaced it with 4x 3kWh GenZ LFP batteries. Each module has its own BMS, so if one module fails, the rest of the battery won't - vital when it's an hour and a half drive for our installer to fix the problem. It's connected to our 9kW of roof panels, DC coupled through a Selectronic SP PRO inverter. The system needs to be reliable as it powers our electric pump for our roof sprinklers, but as an added bonus, almost all our power bills are car charging power imports. We have a Tesla EVSE, but it's controlled by an app called ev.energy that only charges when Amber prices are low.
